It took three days to find something that worked at Lake Almanor on my weekend trip at the end of the summer. I went to the dark side and started out trying to do some spin rod fishing using Rapala lures and trolling speedy shiners and Silvertrons. I feel like I tried everything in the tackle box. The only thing caught was one 15 inch salmon, a blue gill and a couple bass. The last day I noticed that the fish were rolling on top and it looked like they were chasing fish and not hitting flies on top of the water. I decided to pull out the fly rod. I tried a fly that is suppose to look like a tiny dead fish that sits on top of the water with no luck. I also tried a while clouser minnow and got nothing. I then tried a white zonker type streamer. This was the money maker. I had 4 bites in 5 - 10 minutes and caught 2 decent fish (should have had 4). I wish I had pulled out my fly rod two days earlier!
This summer I did a lot of fishing in Lake Almanor and had some pretty good success. My cousin and I had really good success fly fishing at Hamilton Branch which is a creek that feeds into the lake. The fish weren't very big but we caught a decent amount between the two of us. We were very successful using large and small simulators. My cousin caught a pretty large fish with a woolly bugger. I am excited to try more fishing in northern California where i hear the fishing gets really good.
