It had been three years since I had been to Fuller Lake, but I always hear good things about it for fly fishing. I looked up the fish planting schedule and saw that fish were planted in Fuller Lake recently. I decided it was a good time to give Fuller Lake a try.
I reached out to my cousin Chase to go and we headed out at 5 am Saturday morning. We were feeling really optimistic. We got there a little after 6 and were the only ones there. We filled up our float tubes and set out on the lake. I started out with the Fuller Lake fly, which is a smaller olive colored wooly bugger. As we worked our way over to the opposite side of the lake we didn't get a single strike. So I began switching through my flies with no luck. When we got to the other side of the lake I noticed that I was losing air in my tube and there was no way that I was going to make it to the other side of the lake.
I kicked myself over to the bank and walked over to my car, and pumped my tube back up. I then packed my pump in the tube just in case I started losing air on the lake again. I launched back into the lake determined to catch a fish. I went through all of my wet flies. Now when I say all of my wet flies, I mean all of them. I tried mixing up my retrieval and nothing. I didn't get a single strike and neither did my cousin. It was very disappointing. Others around us were catching though. I saw people using spinners catching the most.
One positive from this trip was that my float tube didn't deflate again, but this is the third time I had been to this lake and I can’t remember every catching. I must just have a smell the fish don't like there or something. I really have nothing to report for advice, but I know there are fish in there and I know people that catch there. I'm going to have to do some more research before I go next time. Good luck out there!
